Facts about Androgens...

Androgens are important hormones. Androgens are hormones that are just as natural to a women's body as estrogen. Testosterone is one of the most common androgens and during childbearing years, your testosterone level is actually greater than your level of the strogen estradiol.

Androgens can affect many parts of your body...

Androgens may affect your body in several ways...

  • Stimulate sexual desire
  • Stimulate bone growth
  • Maintain lean body composition
  • Regulate body hair growth
  • Control oil gland activity in skin
  • Affect lipid levels
  • Maintain energy and well-being

What are androgens?
- Androgens are important sex hormones
- Androgens are often called "male hormones", but they are as natural to a women's body as a man's.
- Your body produces less than 10% of the androgens a man produces

What is testosterone?
- Testosterone is a primary androgen
- Testosterone is made mostly by your ovaries

What happens to androgen levels during menopause?
- Your androgen levels can decrease by almost half during menopause
- When a woman's ovaries are surgically removed, androgen loss is more dramatic - testosterone levels may drop as much as 80%

What happens when menopausal women experience androgen deficiency?
Symptoms can include:

  • Lowered sex drive (loss of desire, decreased frequency, and less sexual pleasure)
  • Bone loss
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of well-being

What can androgens do?
Androgens may have direct bone-building effects in post-menopausal women, and may also play a role along with estrogens in the control of unresolved vasomotor symptoms

But aren't androgens responsible for "male" characteristics?
- Androgens are also responsible for male characteristics such as deepening of the voice, hair growth or loss, and acne.
- Androgen therapy should not be used in pregnant or nursing women, or in patients with severe liver damage
